An Open Letter from Facebook Founder Mark Zuckerberg

An Open Letter from Facebook Founder Mark Zuckerberg

It has been a great year for making the world more open and connected. Thanks to your help, more than 350 million people around the world are using Facebook to share their lives online.

To make this possible, we have focused on giving you the tools you need to share and control your information. Starting with the very first version of Facebook five years ago, we've built tools that help you control what you share with which individuals and groups of people. Our work to improve privacy continues today.

Facebook's current privacy model revolves around "networks" — communities for your school, your company or your region. This worked well when Facebook was mostly used by students, since it made sense that a student might want to share content with their fellow students.

Over time people also asked us to add networks for companies and regions as well. Today we even have networks for some entire countries, like India and China.

However, as Facebook has grown, some of these regional networks now have millions of members and we've concluded that this is no longer the best way for you to control your privacy. Almost 50 percent of all Facebook users are members of regional networks, so this is an important issue for us. If we can build a better system, then more than 100 million people will have even more control of their information.

The plan we've come up with is to remove regional networks completely and create a simpler model for privacy control where you can set content to be available to only your friends, friends of your friends, or everyone.

We're adding something that many of you have asked for — the ability to control who sees each individual piece of content you create or upload. In addition, we'll also be fulfilling a request made by many of you to make the privacy settings page simpler by combining some settings. If you want to read more about this, we began discussing this plan back in July.

Since this update will remove regional networks and create some new settings, in the next couple of weeks we'll ask you to review and update your privacy settings. You'll see a message that will explain the changes and take you to a page where you can update your settings. When you're finished, we'll show you a confirmation page so you can make sure you chose the right settings for you. As always, once you're done you'll still be able to change your settings whenever you want.

We've worked hard to build controls that we think will be better for you, but we also understand that everyone's needs are different. We'll suggest settings for you based on your current level of privacy, but the best way for you to find the right settings is to read through all your options and customize them for yourself. I encourage you to do this and consider who you're sharing with online.

Thanks for being a part of making Facebook what it is today, and for helping to make the world more open and connected.

Been wanting to post something on this nifty little Java app. that I have on my phone (thanks to Furizu.net) for ages.

( Yes, I know that this app has been around for ages, but no harm sharing rite? ;p )

Tweeting has made it possible for us to share and update everyone of what we've stumbled upon, our thoughts and our random rants. Previously, you needed to log on to your computer before being able to Tweet.

Then came the smartphones. The berries, and the apples. Non-smartphone users / fans - like me - were left in the lurch. Then Furizu decided to show off an app. on his SE phone - the Tiny Twitter.

(Also available for the berries) this Java app. enables non-smartphone users like Furizu and me, to tweet on the go!

Screenshots below are from my SE C902.
What a boring Tweet. =p

Why do people to this?
This happened this a.m. in the office's lift lobby.

Yup, the other person was trying to get into the elevator. But 2 out of 3 times, she missed them because the elevator doors were closing. O.K. Fine. But does screaming **argh** or going **alaaah....** out loud help?

Push the button la. Or, if she was more adventurous, she could stick her hand in between the sensors / trigger. The doors weren't even halfway closed.

Why didn't I do anything? I was too amused by the whole thing. =p (Anyway, I wasn't THAT close to the buttons or elevator doors.... I wouldn't want to end up looking like her. LoL.)

BTW, Elaise 2 apartment elevators in Bukit Jelutong are potential death traps.

Projek Lima Ratus

Recently I got selected as one of the Beta testers for Project 500.

Well, I filled up a form. So no, it wasn't exclusive. hahahahaha.

1. I got this email. There were as questionnaire that we were suppose to complete. The questions were all SNS (Social Networking Sites , yea .. couldn't help it, Hannah Tan used it .. so why not? LoL..) skewed / related.
2. Then I got this email notification. Saying that I've been selected. Woo hoo. =p

3. So finally the day came. Sent a few txt messages to Ayyman the night before, and a few minutes before registration. He was selected as well, but because he had exams on Monday, he opted not to join in. Found out through Ayyman that Syafique was one of the 500 to be selected too.Registered at the counter. Borak-borak kosong with a guy I met (sorry! forgot your name....!) Spotted Joe Lee and David Lian.

I would estimate around 170++ turned up for the briefing. The rest were either in other States or just couldn't make it.

After a quick intro by Hannah Tan, we quickly found out what Project 500 was about. Let's just say that it's very similar to TweetDeck.

The lovely Hannah Tan. Yes, my pic doesn't do her justice.

Screenshots of the platform.

Tonnes of Qs were tossed by the audience. Some tech. Some were repeat Qs (wake up ppl!).

4. Another notification email was sent, instructing us to log in:
It's only my 2nd day utilising it. Can't say much - yet. It's going to be launched officially in January 2010. So let's hope the bugs are rectified swiftly. I can't use TweetDeck at the office. But Project 500's platform allows me to just do that.

Let's see how it goes.
But I've been getting a lot of Qs from friends in FB about it.

For more information on Project 500, go to www.project-500.com .

1. I'll wait till January - just to see what happens. *ponders..*

2. The free movie wasn't the carrot for me. It was the free HP mini notebooks. I wonder who'll get lucky.

Super Hectic Sunday

What a weekend.

1. Popped by Farah's place to check out the aftermath of overflowing water+God-knows-what courtesy of some blockage in her apartment's pipe. Plumber said that there's a strong possibility that the blockage involves the whole pipe which means the whole apartment has to contribute. Which is unlikely la kan?
My crib in Bukit Jelutong looks like its going to go through the same thing. Touch wood.

2. After Farah's, went to the office to complete a risk management module - which is markah free for our KPI marks.
Too much hassle, but agak berharga to let it go.

3. After 3 hours of videos / interactive games (which froze more than 5 times.. #$@#%@# @~!!), and a 25 multiple choice question quiz, I headed to the Curve for a briefing on Project 500.

Check out the host(ess). *grins* ... ok ... ok ... bad pic, but I only had my C902 on me.

Got to meet up with David Lian and also Joe Lee as well, before we all left before the free screening of New Moon. *forces a smile*. Too bad Syafique and Ayyman couldn't make it.

4. The day ended after a quick wardrobe change ala-Superman, where I then headed to Pulen's sis' wedding in Brickfields.

*phew...!*
